PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Programme is unique in providing professionally qualified researchers capable to lead and apply advanced development of research skills to the rapidly changing field of Psychology.

Employment of psychology is projected to grow in the next ten years, about as fast as the average for all occupations. The programme provides an excellent preparation for further psychological research.And also provides a more diverse and wider field for graduates to expand in their professional development. A psychology profession will stress on disciplines that focus on offering a particular set of skills for a specific type of occupation. These types of studies will provide necessary practical knowledge and training for graduates to succeed in the chosen subject. As opposed to broader scientific studies, psychology professions focus more on practical training rather than on theory and conceptual knowledge.

The programme aim of Master of Science in Psychology (by research) will produce Psychologist who are:

1. Knowledgeable in Psychology field and implement as well as adopt the integral part of research processes
2. Conduct empirical research to perform critical analysis, evaluation and synthesis of complex ideas in psychology
3. Combine ideas with peers, scholarly communities and society to expand the technological, social, and cultural progress in academic contexts.
4. Acquire information of Psychology by literature review for lifelong learning.

The field of psychology is expected to grow by 12% over the next 10 years, resulting in approximately growth of new jobs. Growth in this field will be driven by greater demand for these services in schools, hospitals, mental health centers, and social services agencies. However, one area of the field, industrial-organizational psychologists, is one of the fastest growth areas. The demand for psychological services is increasing, because as people face more difficulties, they are unable to cope and need professional help. The Master of Science Psychology by Research program is unique in providing professionally qualified experts and technicians for the mental health sector in Malaysia and overseas.Job prospects exist in the Government and Private research organizations as Clinical Psychologist, Social Psychologist, Educational Psychologist, Industrial Psychologist, Research psychologist, Developmental psychologist, Vocational rehabilitation provider, Employment counselor, Psychology program manager, Lecturer & Professor to contribute to the profession through independent learning, scholarship, and research.

Intake :


Entry Requirements :

  1. Bachelor of Psychology (Level 6, MOH) or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 out of 4.00, or
  2. Bachelor of Psychology (Level 6, MOH) or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 out of 4.00, and a minimum prerequisite of 45 credits of psychology module or equivalent (covering all 8 fields of knowledge such as Scientific Inquiry, Basics of Biology in Behavior, Human Development, cognitive fundamentals, effectiveness in behavior, individual differences, socio-cultural context in behavior, values in psychology and the application of psychological science) and undergraduate research projects with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 out of 4.00 in the prerequisite module; or
  3. Bachelor of Psychology (Level 6, MOH) or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 out of 4.00, and a minimum prerequisite of 30 credits of psychology module or equivalent (covering all 8 fields of knowledge namely scientific inquiry, biological fundamentals in behavior, human development, cognitive fundamentals in behavior, individual differences, socio-cultural context in behavior, values in psychology and application of psychological sciences) with a minimum CGPA of 215 out of 4.00 in the prerequisite module, and the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) of the Psychology Subject Test with a minimum score of 550.
  4. Other qualifications recognized as equivalent by the Malaysian Government.

English Competency Requirements forInternational Students

  1. Obtain at least:
    • International Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum score of 5.0; or
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) (internet based) with scores
    • minimum 34; or
    • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) with a minimum score of 160; or
    • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) with a minimum score of 180; or or
    • Pearson Test of English, Academic (PTE Academic) with a minimum score of 36; or
  2. Students originating from countries that use English as speech are given an exemption from condition (i); or
  3. Students who use academic qualifications from institutions that use English as the medium of instruction are fully given a conditional exemption (i)
